Single Pulse Stimulation

This chapter is dedicated to the impact of pulsatile stimuli on noisy cluster states. In order to avoid misunderstandings it should be mentioned that in physics the duration of pulses is typically small compared to the time scale of the reference processes under consideration. On the contrary, in the context of phase resetting in biology (cf. Winfree 1980, Glass Mackey 1988) pulses can but need not be short compared to the period of an oscillation. The duration of the pulse can even be of the same order as a period of an oscillation.
