Tunable Lasers and Applications

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Optical Sciences ((SSOS,volume 3))

Abstract

Shortly after the invention of the laser it became obvious that it is also a useful tool for remote measurements of atmospheric parameters via backscattering processes. The properties of lasers such as their large spectral brightness, small divergence and frequency tunability are key factors in the development of various remote sensing techniques. In this paper a brief survey on measurements performed so far will be given; hereby the pollution studies will be emphasized. The paper also reports some so far unpublished results obtained in our laboratory.
