Abstract
Our goal in this paper is to illustrate some areas where tunable lasers—IR, UV, and vacuum UV—might play a definitive role in achieving a significantly better understanding of the complex chemical and physical transformations occurring in the natural and polluted troposphere. Such an advancement in knowledge would not only be of fundamental scientific interest per se, but would also serve to greatly improve the quality and breadth of the technical data base upon which the air pollution control strategies of all of our countries should be founded.
