Unter den thorakalen Neoplasien werden die Neoplasien der Lungen und Bronchien, des Mediastinums und der Pleura zusammengefasst. Tumoren des Ösophagus und des Herzens werden primär nicht darunter gerechnet. Die Symptomatik ist sehr unterschiedlich und hängt — abgesehen von paraneoplastischen Symptomen — vor allem von der anatomischen Lokalisation und der Beeinträchtigung von relevanten anatomischen Strukturen ab. Symptome, die eine Früherkennung ermöglichen, sind sehr selten. Teilweise sind sehr große Tumoren ohne Symptome, oft werden die malignen Tumoren erst im metastasierten Stadium diagnostiziert.
