Photoelectron Events: A Doubly Stochastic Poisson Process or Theory of Photoelectron Statistics

In the previous chapter, we studied the classical statistical description of optical fields without any reference to the question of their measurement. In this chapter we study the statistical properties of photoelectrons that are generated when light illuminates a photodetector. If the light level is sufficiently low, then the photoelectrons can be treated as individual events, the statistics of whose occurrences have to be described by the techniques of point processes (Chap. 3).
