Der französische Arzt Prosper Menière beschrieb 1861 eindrucksvoll ein Krankheitsbild, das bis dahin für eine Hirnkrankheit gehalten wurde. Er konnte deutlich machen, dass es sich um eine eigenständige Erkrankung des Innenohrs handelt.
