Modelling of polymer – surfactant interfacial layers of latex particles by monolayer technique

Abstract

Mixed monolayers of the nonionogenic surfactants α-(carboxyethyl)-ω-(trimethylsiloxy)polydimethylsiloxane (PDS) and pluronic F-168 were studied. Both individual components and their mixtures with various compositions formed stable monolayers at the water-air interface. The collapse pressures of the mixed monolayers were about 36% higher than that for the individual PDS monolayer. The optimal interval was found for PDS

pluronic weight ratios (from 1.0:0.2 to 1.0:0.6) for the formation of stable mixed monolayers at the water-air interface. It was demonstrated that heterophase polymerization of styrene in the presence of PDS:pluronic mixtures in the proposed interval yields stable polymer dispersions with desirable properties.
