Abstract
Shortly after the invention of the laser, phase locking of the axial eigenmodes of the laser cavity, briefly referred to as mode locking, opened the way to the generation of ultrashort laser pulses. Numerous applications benefited from the availability of short pulses: time-resolved (pump-probe) spectroscopy, precision material processing and large-bandwidth telecommunication are only a few of the many examples. Last but not least, ultrafast laser sources proved to be an invaluable laboratory tool for investigating new regimes of nonlinear optics.
