Abstract
Tunable lasers are revolutionizing liatomic molecular spectroscopy. Their high resolution (anything <0.02 cm−1 = 600 MHz by conventional standards) can resolve the rotational spectra of the heaviest diatomics and reveals a constellation of fine and hyperfine magnetic and electric structure; their high intensity permits observation of two quantum absorption, saturation labeling of spectra (e.g. double resonance), optical pumping of molecules, and the observation of extremely low concentrations of molecules. Finally the frequency of laser light can be determined interferometrically or by heterodyne techniques—both being far more accurate than the conventional methods of grating spectroscopy.
