Abstract

The advantages of the 72P3/2 to 72S1/2 transition in Cs for definitive studies of the superradiance of an initially inverted long cylinder are discussed. Quantum beat interferences at both upper and lower state separations are presented. Possible applications of superfluorescence beats to spectroscopy are noted. Observation of a regime of single pulse emission free from significant inhomogeneous dephasing, homogeneous relaxation, or linear diffraction is emphasized. Comparisons of the data are made to the quantum mean-field and semi-classical Maxwell-Schroedinger models of the superfluorescence process. The lack of complete agreement suggests the need for a better treatment of the quantum-to-classical transition and dynamic transverse effects.
