Abstract

Laser oscillation on several molecular iodine BO +u - X1 +g transitions is observed. The unique feature of this laser is that it is excited by a continuous wave optical pump, a single longitudinal mode Ar+ laser, and that it exhibits cw oscillation on more than 100 individually selectable transitions spanning more than one octave from 0.57 to 1.35μ. Optimum gain, pump threshold, and photon conversion efficiency, respectively 0.004 cm-1, 4 mW, and 10%, are obtained for laser transitions near 1.3μ.
