Genetic Mosaic Studies of Pattern Formation in Drosophila melanogaster, with Special Reference to the Prepattern Hypothesis

Genetic Mosaics and Cell Differentiation

Part of the book series: Results and Problems in Cell Differentiation ((RESULTS,volume 9))

Abstract

During the early period of Drosophila genetics, it was Sturtevant who recognized the importance of genetic mosaics for the field of developmental biology. His early studies with genetic mosaics provided later researchers with phenomena, ideas, and methods, such as: the analysis of cell lineage relations between organs or specific sites of a gynander or a genetic mosaic by statistically assessing the frequency of genetically marked organs or sites (1929). He also recognized two kinds of interactions (autonomy and nonautonomy) between the different genotypes in a genetic mosaic, as an important clue for studies of gene action (1920, 1927, 1932). Thus, he contributed much to the progress not only of developmental biology, but also of biochemical genetics and behavioral genetics.
