Abstract

In 1947, when D.B. Judd at the U.S. National Bureau of Standards was asked by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences whether he could suggest “some badly needed research program that would have nothing to do with armaments and war,” he suggested a study of uniform color scales [8.31]. A uniform color scale is a linear sequence of colors that differ by perceptually equal amounts (Sect. 9.5). The Optical Society of America (OSA) decided to undertake the project, and its Committee on Uniform Scales was formed the same year with Judd as chairman. It turned out that years of difficult pioneering work were required, involving both the specification of the uniform sampling of color space and, finally, the production of precise color samples.
