Forage Crops

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Genome Mapping and Molecular Breeding in Plants ((GENMAPP,volume 6))

Abstract

Forage crops are generally classified as either pasturage or silage crops. Silage crops include forage maize, sorghum, oats, and other grain crops from which the seeds are usually harvested and the remainder is used as animal feed. Almost all crops that are used for pasturage are either grasses or legumes, and the whole plant, including seeds, is usually used as animal fodder. In this chapter, we focus only on forage grasses and legumes. According to where they are grown, forage grasses and legumes can be classified as cool-season or warm-season crops, and according to the reproductive pattern, as autogamous, allogamous, or apomictic (Table 1).
