Auffälligste Entwicklung der Schlafmittel ist der seit 1992 zu beobachtende starke Verordnungsrückgang um etwa 70 %. Im Jahr 2005 waren die Hypnotikaverordnungen erstmals wieder auf diesem niedrigen Niveau stabil. Leichten Rückgängen bei den Benzodiazepinen standen stärkere Zunahmen bei den Benzodiazepinagonisten Zolpidem und Zopiclon gegenüber.
