Ein Harnverhalt tritt meist im Verlauf einer urologischen Tumorerkrankung, z. B. bei Prostata- oder Harnblasenkarzinom, auf, kann aber grundsätzlich durch alle Tumorerkrankungen im kleinen Becken ausgelöst werden. Opioidhaltige Analgetika, Schmerztherapie über Peridualkatheter können Ursache für einen Harnverhalt sein. Symptome sind Schmerzen, eine überlaufinkontinenz und bei chronischem Harnverhalt ein Nierenversagen. Die sofortige Entlastung der Harnblase über einen Blasenkatheter ist obligat. Im Anschluss an die Notfallbehandlung erfolgt die weiterführende Diagnostik.
