Eines der momentan beliebtesten Frameworks für die Entwicklung von Web-Applikationen mit Datenbankbezug ist Ruby on Rails (Rails)web. Im Juli 2004 stellte David Heinemeier Hansson dieses Framework erstmals vor. Vorteile von Rails sind insbesondere die schnelle Entwicklung serverseitiger Web-Applikationen mit Datenbankanbindung und die durch das Framework praktisch erzwungene Softwarearchitektur im Model-View-Controller-Paradigma MVC (vgl. 4.3).
