Die Sterilität ist definiert als ungewollte Kinderlosigkeit trotz regelmäβiger Kohabitationen über mehr als 2 Jahre. Eine Diagnostik und Therapie sollte aber nach spätestens einem Jahr erfolgen, insbesondere bei fortgeschrittenem Alter der Frau. Derzeit sind in Deutschland ca. 10–15% aller Paare ungewollt kinderlos.
