Das HELLP-Syndrom stellt eine schwere Verlaufsform der Präeklampsie/ Eklampsie dar. Die aktuelle Literatur beschreibt das HELLP-Syndrom als eine schwere Form der Präeklampsie mit Blutgerinnungsstörungen, obgleich in Vorträgen immer wieder auf die »Entität« HELLP-Syndrom hingewiesen wird, in dessen Verlauf es zu Blutdruckerhöhungen kommen kann. Fred Kubli (1987, mündl. Mitteilung) wies bereits darauf hin, dass das 1982 von Weinstein eingeführte Akronym »HELLP« den klinisch tätigen Geburtshelfern als Syndrom seit langem bekannt war.
