Abstract
The supersonic flow over a double cone structure may become unstable and start to pulsate for a large enough opening angle of the second cone. If the double cone geometry is fixed, the onset of instability is entirely governed by the characteristics of the incoming free stream flow. Through a series of experiments with force and pressure measurements and simultaneous visualization of the flow field it was possible to determine experimentally the threshold Mach number at which such instabilities first become notable.
