Abstract

In third generation mobile communications networks, the core network nodes such as Home Location Register (HLR) and GPRS Support Nodes are implemented on a highly scalable, real-time mobility database cluster. In this letter, we propose an analytic model to investigate the availability and performance of the parallel system for the HLR. The study indicates that the number of processors, the steady-state probability that a processor is operational, the arrival rate of HLR accesses, and the variance of the service time for a processor affect the system performance. Our study provides guidelines for designing the parallel HLR system.
