Abstract

As the economy becomes increasingly knowledge-based in most advanced countries, processes of knowledge exchange become pivotal. These issues were taken up in Kobayashi et al. (1991) and related to spatial knowledge production in face-to-face meetings via an elegant formulation by Beckmann (1994), as already described in Sect. 2.3.2. Although some classes of knowledge can be exchanged electronically, more complex knowledge exchange processes still appear to require face-to-face meetings. Such meetings generate travel by at least some of the participants, leading to a requirement for spatial models.
