Zusammenfassung
Internationalisierung hat viele Facetten. Sie manifestiert sich in grenzüberschreitenden Handelsbeziehungen und politischer Zusammenarbeit, internationalen Organisationen und Abkommen, internationalen Studiengängen usw. Mit dem Begriff ‚Internationalisierung‘ wird auf Entwicklungen rekurriert, die die Existenz von Nationalstaaten voraus setzten. Heute (Stand: September 2011) gibt es weltweit 193 von der internationalen Staatengemeinschaft, vertreten durch die internationale Organisation ‚Vereinte Nationen‘ , anerkannte Nationalstaaten. Noch zur Zeit des Zweiten Weltkrieges belief sich ihre Zahl „nur“ auf 65. Internationalisierungsanforderungen durchziehen inzwischen sämtliche Bereiche; sie manifestieren sich im Bildungswesen beispielsweise in der Zunahme europäischer Bildungsgänge und im Ausland verbrachter Studienjahre, bilingualen Schulen, fremdsprachlichen Angebote an staatlichen Schulen oder dem internationalen Schüleraustausch. Unter den Entwicklungen im Bildungssystem, die als Reaktionen auf Internationalisierungspostulate gedeutet werden können, stellen internationale Schulen ein vergleichsweise schmales, etabliertes und hoch angesehenes Segment der internationalen Schulentwicklung dar.
