Zusammenfassung

Fernsehserien haben seit Mitt e der 1990er-Jahre Konjunktur – als Publikumserfolg, aber auch als Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Beschäftigung. Unter dem Label Quality TV hat sich – insbesondere in den USA – ein Kanon an Titeln herausgebildet, der vielfach untersucht worden ist. So gelten Hill Street Blues (NBC, 1981-1987) und Twin Peaks (ABC, 1990-1991) als Vorläufer und Wegbereiter einer neuen Serienkultur, Die Sopranos (HBO, 1999-2007), Six Feet Under (HBO, 2001-2005) und The Shield (FX Network, 2002-2008) als Prototypen des Quality TV.
