Vermutlich gilt für die allermeisten Menschen überall auf der Welt der schlichte Umstand: Wir fühlen uns lieber gut als schlecht. Gleichwohl gibt es erhebliche kulturelle Unterschiede im emotionalen und motivationalen Erleben. Zum Beispiel geben westliche Kulturangehörige in Befragungen eine deutliche höhere allgemeine Lebenszufriedenheit an als Asiaten (z. B. Diener, Diener & Diener, 1995).
