Bei Charles Horton Cooley (1864-1929) handelt es sich um eine derjenigen soziologischen Gründerfiguren, die Emotionen entscheidenden Wert bei der Erklärung sozialer Prozesse zusprechen – und zwar nicht, wie bei manch anderem Klassiker, als präsoziale Variable, irrationaler Störfaktor oder residuales Handlungsmotiv, sondern als soziokulturell geprägte, für jeden Handlungsvollzug relevante und damit soziologisch stets zu beachtende Erklärungsgröße.
