Die Besonderheit des Städtischen

Zusammenfassung

Auf die Frage im Titel würde man spontan „Ja“ antworten. Aber sie ist viel komplizierter, weshalb die Frage wohl auch gestellt wurde. Ich sehe drei Probleme, die Frage zu beantworten. Erstens muss bestimmt werden, was die Besonderheit des Städtischen überhaupt sein kann. Zweitens ist zu entscheiden, ob die herausgearbeitete Besonderheit auch den Kern der Stadtsoziologie bilden kann und soll. Zu wissen, welches die Besonderheit ist, besagt ja noch nicht, dass sie auch geeignet ist, den Kern der Stadtsoziologie auszumachen. Das führt auf das dritte Problem. Wir müssen prüfen, ob eine Stadtsoziologie, die auf „der“ Besonderheit beruht, an die Allgemeine Soziologie anschlussfähig ist. Es könnte nämlich folgendes Paradoxon auftreten: Je mehr wir etwas spezifisch Städtisches zum zentralen Gegenstand der Stadtsoziologie machen, desto weniger lassen sich auf die solcherart bestimmte Stadtsoziologie allgemeine Theorien der Soziologie anwenden. Im Übrigen ist es vielleicht gar nicht möglich, das zweite Problem unabhängig von dem dritten zu lösen, weil man die Suche nach der Besonderheit bereits mit dem Gedanken vornimmt, ob das mögliche Ergebnis auch fruchtbar sei, die Stadtsoziologie zu konstituieren.
