Zusammenfassung
In der Literatur zu regionalen Innovationssystemen wird räumlicher Nähe und einer intensiven Wissenszirkulation auf der regionalen Ebene eine große Bedeutung für die Generierung von Innovationen beigemessen (siehe etwa Cooke 1992, 2008; Autio 1998; Asheim/Gertler 2005). Ähnliche Annahmen und Aussagen finden sich auch in verwandten theoretischen Konzepten zu „Industrial Districts“ (Becattini 1990; Brusco 1990), innovativen Milieus (Camagni 1991a; Maillat 1998) und in anderen territorialen Innovationsmodellen (für einen Überblick siehe Moulaert/Sekia 2003) sowie in einer Vielzahl von Beiträgen zu regionalen Clustern (Porter 1998, Malmberg/Maskell 2002). Das Ziel des vorliegenden Beitra-ges besteht darin, diese Annahmen vor dem Hintergrund der Erkenntnisse neuer Forschungsansätze zur Bedeutung unterschiedlicher Näheformen (Gertler 2003; Boschma 2005; Moodysson/Jonsson 2007; Torre 2008; Breschi/Lissoni 2009) kritisch zu beleuchten. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die soziale, organisatorische, kognitive und institutionelle Dimension von Nähe eingegangen, wobei hier den von Boschma (2005) vorgeschlagenen Begriffsdefinitionen für diese Nähetypen gefolgt wird. Im folgenden Beitrag wird argumentiert, dass die Relevanz räumlicher Nähe nicht losgelöst von ihrem – zum Teil als komplementär und zum Teil als substitutiv zu charakterisierenden – Verhältnis zu anderen Näheformen bestimmt werden kann. Weiters wird die Notwendigkeit von permanenter räumlicher Nähe als Schlüsselfaktor für einen effektiven Wissenstransfer hinterfragt und dargelegt, unter welchen Voraussetzungen auch temporäre räumliche Nähe eine intensive Wissenszirkulation begünstigen kann. Darüber hinaus gilt es zu zeigen, dass die Bedeutung von geographischer Nähe auch in Abhängigkeit vom jeweiligen Kontext und den betrachteten Wissensquellen, Wissenstypen und Wissensbeziehungen variiert. In weiterer Folge soll die Annahme eines einfachen positiven Zusammenhanges zwischen Nähe und Wissensgenerierung als zu einfach kritisiert und die These einer Nicht-Linearität dieser Beziehung vorgestellt werden. Den Abschluss bildet schließlich eine Skizzierung des weiteren Forschungsbedarfes.
