Zusammenfassung
Menschen verbringen immer mehr Zeit im Internet. Sie suchen nach Informationen, nutzen Unterhaltungsangebote, schreiben E-Mails oder „engagieren“ sich auf Social Media Sites. Das Internet bietet einen großen Facettenreichtum und wird aktiv und selektiv genutzt. Laut der ARD/ZDF-Onlinestudie 2010 dient es vor allem als Informationsquelle, Spiel- und Unterhaltungsplattform; rund die Hälfte der Online-Nutzung entfällt aber auf Kommunikation (Oehmichen/Schröter 2010). Mit der Möglichkeit der (synchronen) interpersonalen Kommunikation via E-Mail, Newsgroups oder Chat-Foren hat das Online-Medium ein wichtiges Alleinstellungsmerkmal gegenüber traditionellen Massenmedien. Der digitalen Technologie Internet gesellschaftliches Transformationspotenzial zuzusprechen, erscheint mehr als berechtigt. Sehr schnell ergibt sich aber die Frage, wie diese Transformationen genau aussehen und ob sie eher positive oder eher negative Folgen auf den einzelnen Nutzer haben. Wer hat also Recht: die Euphoriker oder die Dysphoriker? Ist der Computer, bzw. das Internet ein Kontakt- und Beziehungsmedium (Höflich/Gebhardt 2001) oder vereinsamen wir vor unseren Bildschirmen?
