Zusammenfassung

Institutionalistisches Denken ist in der Ökonomie über lange Zeit nicht en vogue gewesen. Dies hat wesentlich mit den aus der klassischen Physik (Mechanik) übernommenen Denktraditionen zu tun. Auch war der zentrale Fokus über Jahrzehnte auf die Marktebene konzentriert; die Produktionsebene, die in den klassischen Konzeptionen bis in die 1870er Jahre eine zentrale Rolle gespielt hatte, wurde vom neoklassischen Denken ausgeblendet. Obwohl es immer wieder Ansätze zu einer Theorie der Firma gab, kann man von einer intensiveren Diskussion über die Firma eigentlich erst mit Beginn der 1970er Jahre sprechen. Alle grundlegenden firmentheoretischen Konzepte wurden – unter Rückgriff auf Vorläuferinnen und Vorläufer – in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren entwickelt, weshalb sich die verwendete Literatur hauptsächlich auf diesen Zeitraum bezieht. So kann man das Folgende auch als einen theoriegeschichtlichen Beitrag lesen.
