Die Bedeutung, die Handy, Internet, Blue tooth, RFID und Path Finder-Systeme für das Alltagsleben inzwischen haben, ist augenscheinlich und zugleich schwierig zu beurteilen. Nach den übertriebenen Erwartungen, die noch vor dem Platzen der New Economy-Blase und auch nach einer dann folgenden Unterschätzung der neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechniken in der Stadtforschung existiert haben, kann heute nüchtern der Frage nachgegangen werden, in welcher Weise von einer gewissen „Medialen Urbanität“ gesprochen werden kann und wie sinnvoll eine solche Terminologie ist. Ausgegangen wird hier von einem Medienverständnis, das Medien nicht lediglich als Informations- und Kommunikationsträger, -speicher oder -vermittler sieht, sondern in Anschluss an gegenwärtige Theorien der Medienwissenschaften (vgl. Engell/Vogl 1999, 10ff.) die Eigenständigkeit in der Weltproduktion von Medien als Ausgangspunkt der Diskussion um eine solche, von Medien geschaffene Stadt nehmen soll.
