Zusammenfassung

Der klassische amerikanische Strukturalismus begründet die methodologisch-theoretische Position der sozialwissenschaftlichen Netzwerkanalyse als „strukturale Analyse“ (structural analysis). Ein Hauptakteur des klassischen amerikanischen Strukturalismus ist Harrison White, der nicht nur an der Ausbildung von Generationen von Netzwerkforschern maßgeblich mitgewirkt hat, sondern auch mit seinem 1992 erstmalig erschienenen Identity and Control eine zentrale Referenz für den neuen amerikanischen Strukturalismus liefert. Dieser neue amerikanische Strukturalismus baut auf den Annahmen und Erkenntnissen der strukturalen Analyse auf, öffnet und erweitert sie jedoch, insbesondere durch das Einbeziehen sowohl von kulturellen Aspekten, wie Geschichten, Praktiken und Bedeutungen, als auch von historischen Prozessen (Beckert 2005; Diaz-Bone 2006; Mizruchi 1994; Trezzini 1998).
