Wieviele Verbindungen zwischen persönlichen Bekannten muss man hintereinander knüpfen, bis zwei zufällig gewählte Leute durch so eine Kette miteinander verbunden sind? Milgram schätzte für die USA vor vier Jahrzehnten, dass typischerweise sechs solche Verbindungsschritte nötig sind: „It's a small world!“. Dieses Kapitel behandelt Modelle, vor allem aus der Physik, die im letzten Jahrzehnt für solche Phänomene analytisch (mit Bleistift und Papier) oder mit Computer-Simulationen untersucht wurden, mit Vorarbeiten der späteren Nobelpreisträger Paul Flory (Chemie) und Herbert Simon (Wirtschaft) sowie der Mathematiker Erdös und Rényi.
