Abstiege aus der gesellschaftlichen Mitte und ihre Folgen für das subjektive Wohlbefinden

Zusammenfassung

Zwei Behauptungen halten sich hartnäckig im öffentlichen Diskurs über soziale Ungleichheit und Armut: Zum einen, dass soziale Abstiege kein schichtspezifisches Phänomen mehr seien, sondern – einem breit gestreuten Alltagsrisiko gleich – auch die gesellschaftliche Mitte beträfen. Und zum anderen geht man davon aus, dass Armut weitere Benachteiligungen nach sich ziehe und eine Abwärtsspirale in Gang setze, die nicht nur das materielle Existenzminimum gefährde, sondern auch Partizipationschancen und Wohlbefinden empfindlich untergrabe. Für beide Thesen, das erhöhte Abstiegsrisiko der gesellschaftlichen Mitte und die Kumulationsthese, gibt es erstaunlich wenig empirische Evidenz.
