Zusammenfassung

Die Frage nach der Existenz einer europäischen Identität wird immer wieder gestellt, in der Politik wie in der Wissenschaft. Gibt es etwas, das Europäerinnen bzw. Europäer gemein haben und das sie von anderen unterscheidet? Oder zumindest etwas, das man den europäischen Staaten zuschreiben könnte? Als Kandidaten gelten unter anderem: die gemeinsamen christlichen Wurzeln, das Erbe der Aufklärung, gemeinsame Werte, die sozialstaatliche Verfasstheit. Und gleich fallen einem Gegenargumente ein: die Zersplitterung der christlichen Kirchen und das muslimische Erbe sowie die religiöse Vielfalt im heutigen Europa, die Widerstände gegen die Aufklärung, die Schwierigkeiten, gemeinsame Werte zu finden sobald man die höchsten Abstraktionsniveaus verlässt, die Dispute über verbindliche Regelungen im wohlfahrtsstaatlichen Bereich von Europäischer Sozialcharta zur Charta der Grundrechte. Im Übrigen ist es ja keineswegs so, dass Europa ein Monopol auf auch nur eines dieser Charakteristika beanspruchen könnte.
