Zusammenfassung

Wie wenige Andere hat Peter Hedström in den vergangenen Jahren die Debatte um eine erklärende, mechanismische Soziologie vorangetrieben. Die Forderung, dass die Soziologie ihre Wissenschaftlichkeit steigern müsse, indem sie sich zu einer erklärenden Disziplin fortentwickelt, wird von ihm allerdings nicht zum ersten Mal erhoben. Für die Soziologie kommt dieses Verdienst Robert K. Merton zu, der zugleich auch als Gründervater einer Analytischen Soziologie gelten darf. Diese doppelte Parallele legt es nahe, nach dem spezifischen Verhältnis beider Ansätze zu fragen. Auf der Grundlage einer Rekonstruktion des Mertonschen Erklärungsprogramms lautet die These des Aufsatzes, dass der entscheidende Unterschied zu jenem der Analytischen Soziologie in der grundlegenden Bedeutung von Opportu-nitätsstrukturen, der Rolle von Konflikten sowie der spezifischen Erklärung durch Mechanismen zu suchen ist. Um diese Einschätzung zu belegen, geht es im Folgenden in einem ersten Schritt zunächst darum, die unterschiedlichen Ausgangpositionen der beiden Ansätze zu skizzieren; in einem zweiten Schritt wird der von Hedström gegen Mertons Konzeption der Theorien mittlerer Reichweite erhobene Empirizismus- und Eklektizismusvorwurf widerlegt. Im Hinblick auf die zentrale Bedeutung von Opportunitätsstrukturen, das Interesse an den aus ihnen resultierenden Konflikten und die Funktionsweise von Mechanismen für die Erklärung sozialer Prozesse wird abschließend ein knapper vergleichender Blick auf die Erklärungsprogramme beider Ansätze geworfen.
