Zusammenfassung
Diplomatie kann noch immer als ein über Jahrhunderte wirkungsmächtiges, klassisches Instrument der Außenpolitik bezeichnet werden. Auch wenn die diplomatische Praxis zu Anfang des 21. Jahrhundert sich wesentlich von der vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg unterscheidet. Diplomatie als Kunst der Verhandlung (Francois de Callière) ist bis heute für die Politik der Staaten so bedeutsam wie in früheren Jahrhunderten. Für den Kriegstheoretiker Clausewitz war die Vermeidung von Gewalt zwischen Staaten primär durch die Chance der Diplomatie möglich.
