Abstract

Discourses in western societies have generated a wealth of images and imaginings about Muslim men (Ouzgane 2003), who are generally considered to be backward-minded, patriarchal and fundamentalist in contrast to their ‘western’ counterparts. Such prejudices also lie at the heart of most popular discourses on the sons of Muslim migrants, where the topos of being “lost between the cultures” is often added (Poynting et al. 2004: 87). Concerning the living situation of Turkish youth of the second generation, these discourses depict Turkish girls mainly as victims, whereas the boys are seen as complicit in their backwardminded parents' culture, which is considered to be patriarchal and disposed to religious fundamentalism. For some time now, feminist scholars have criticised such reductionist views by highlighting spaces of agency that second generation Turkish girls establish (e.g. Otyakmaz 1995). In contrast, theoretically and empirically well-informed academic work on the situation of Turkish (as well as other migrant) boys of migrant background is rare to date.
