Zusammenfassung
Einem seiner bekanntesten Essays hat James Clifford ein Zitat als Motto vorangestellt, das sich – ungewöhnlich genug – auf ihn selbst bezieht. Es geht auf seinen Kollegen Paul Rabinow zurück und lautet folgendermaßen: „Clifford takes as his natives, as well as his informants, (…) anthropologists (…). We are being observed and inscribed” (Clifford 1988b: 21). Diese Passage vermittelt in ihrem Doppelcharakter als Zitat und Motto eine komplexe Aussage: Als Zitat teilt sie dem Leser mit, dass Clifford als Historiker und Anthropologe über Anthropologen arbeitet und insofern Anthropologie der Anthropologie betreibt, kurz: Metaanthropologie. Als Motto signalisiert sie dem Leser, dass sich Clifford mit dieser Aussagen über seine Person zu identifizieren vermag, Fremd- und Selbstwahrnehmung demnach zur Deckung gelangen. Letzteres berührt Fragen der Repräsentation, die den Metaanthropologen Clifford stets interessiert haben und sich wie ein roter Faden durch sein gesamtes wissenschaftliches Werk ziehen.
