Zusammenfassung
Benedict Anderson sagt, dass die Nation mit all ihren Merkmalen eine „imagined community“ bzw. eine „imagined nation“ ist, also ein in den Köpfen und Herzen der Mitglieder der Nation vorgestelltes Konstrukt. Demnach fühlen sich die Mitglieder der vorgestellten Gemeinschaft trotz geographischer Entfernungen zu einer symbolischen oder realen Heimstätte und einer Gemeinschaft von Gleichen verbunden. Diese Verbundenheit wird über Sprache, Symbole, Mythen und Geschichte, dem „raw matrial of nationalism“, aufrechterhalten und über Grenzen und Generationen hinweg weitergegeben. Die gemeinsamen Symbole werden über die Printmedien zwischen den Mitgliedern der sprachlichen oder ethnischen Gemeinschaft verbreitet und nehmen dabei eine zentrale Rolle in der Bildung und der Pflege von Gruppenidentitäten wie z.B. einer nationalen Identität ein (vgl. Anderson 1988). Somit ist die Nationenbildung nicht entscheidend von der physischen Nähe der Mitglieder der Gemeinschaft zu einander abhängig sondern von der Vorstellung: „In der Tat sind alle Gemeinschaften, die größer sind als die dörflichen Face-to-face-Kontakte, vorgestellte Gemeinschaften. Gemeinschaften sollten nicht durch ihre Authentizität voneinander unterschieden werden, sondern durch die Art und Weise, in der sie vorgestellt werden“ (Anderson 1988: 16).
