Zusammenfassung

Die Idee, durch politische Maßnahmen schnelles wirtschaftliches Wachstum zu bewirken und damit den Lebensstandard der Bevölkerung entscheidend zu verbessern, erhielt in der Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg Aufschwung. Unter dem Begriff „Entwicklung“ tauchte sie in den Bewegungen gegen die europäische Kolonialherrschaft auf. Den Anführern der Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen ging es insofern nicht nur um die Erlangung politischer Souveränität, sondern ebenso um die wirtschaftliche Unabhängigkeit ihrer Länder und die Erreichung der hohen westlichen Lebensstandards. Politische Maßnahmen zur Förderung der Industrialisierung und der Schaffung neuer Lohnarbeitsmöglichkeiten für ArbeiterInnen, die zuvor von Subsistenzwirtschaft lebten, sollten dazu beitragen, die verarmten Agrargesellschaften in moderne Industriestaaten zu transformieren.
