Im Herbst 2007 wurde das Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)mit dem Friedensnobelpreis ausgezeichnet, eine Ehrung die nicht nur dem erreichtenKonsens über die anthropogenen Ursachen des Klimawandels galt. DasNobel-Komitee würdigte auch die internationale Kooperation von Wissenschaftlern,die über den formalen IPCC-Prozess weit hinausgeht (Kerr/Kintisch 2007).Diese Kooperation basiert auf der Vielfalt interdisziplinärer Gemeinschaftenund einem heterogenen Netzwerk nationaler und internationaler Organisationen.In diesem Kapitel wird am Beispiel der atmosphärischen Chemie gezeigt, dassangesichts ökologischer Probleme neue Formen offener Großforschung entstandensind. Offenheit hat dabei nicht nur eine legitimatorische Funktion innerhalbdes internationalen Klimaregimes; sie entstand auch als Lösung von Kooperationsproblemen,mit denen wissenschaftliche Gemeinschaften ebenso überfordertwären wie formale Forschungsorganisationen.
