Frühe Studien zum Altern und zur Entwicklung im Alter kamen oftmals zu demselben Ergebnis, nämlich dass wir mit zunehmendem Alter unweigerlich abbauen. Zu diesen Aussagen gelangten die Forscher mit dem folgenden Ansatz: gesunde Junge wurden mit bettlägerigen Kranken verglichen oder es wurden Testleistungen von Studenten und betagten Altersheimbewohnern erhoben und verglichen. Betrachtet wurden also gerade mal zwei (sehr) unterschiedliche Gruppen. Darüber hinaus wurde selten in Betracht gezogen, dass die Generation der Älteren eine schlechtere oder überhaupt keine Bildung genossen hatte. Aus den Ergebnissen wurde bisweilen geschlussfolgert, dass Ältere prinzipiell dümmer, langsamer, schlechter und so weiter sind. Ja, so ist es wohl — oder doch nicht?
