Polens Wandel vom Satellitenstaat der Sowjetunion zum Befehlshaber einer eigenen Schutzzone im Irak hat viele neue Bezeichnungen für den neuen Status Polens als wichtigen Akteur in den Internationalen Beziehungen mit sich gebracht. Sie reichen von „Amerikas Protegé im Osten“307 über „neuer Player“308 bis hin zu „Dreh- und Angelpunkt der regionalen Sicherheit“309. Wie sehr sich Polens Rolle in der kurzen Zeitspanne von gut einem Jahrzehnt verändert hat, zeigt ein Zitat von US-Präsident George W. Bush wärend seines Warschau- Aufenthalts im Juni 2001: „Die Frage ist nicht mehr, was andere für Polen tun können, sondern was Amerika und Polen und ganz Europa für den Rest der Welt tun können.“310 Polens Bedeutung als internationaler Akteur hat zugenommen, sowohl im Bereich der transatlantischen Sicherheit als auch auf dem europäischen Parkett. Immer häufiger ist in der Presse die Rede von Polen als „regionaler Führungsmacht“.
