Dieser Beitrag thematisiert länderübergreifende Mobilitätsprozesse innerhalb der Europäischen Union. Diese können insofern als transnational verstanden werden, als sie sich sozialstrukturell nicht nur auf die beteiligten Herkunfts- und Zielländer der Migration beziehen. Sie verbinden unterschiedliche Nationalstaaten mit einander und eröffnen dadurch auch einen europäischen sozialen Raum. Verbunden mit dieser konzeptionellen Annahme können innereuropäische Mobilität bzw. Wanderungen als Bewegung von einem nationalen sozialen Raum „in“ einen transnationalen sozialen Raum interpretiert werden. Mit diesen Wanderungen treten auch Veränderungen des sozialen Status auf, d.h. Positionsveränderungen im System sozialer Ungleichheiten, wie Aufstiege oder Unterbrechungen des Erwerbsverlaufs. Diese Statusdynamiken lassen sich sowohl auf Herkunfts- und Zielgesellschaften von Wanderungen als auch auf den transnationalen sozialen Raum, d.h. auf die transnational mobile Gruppe selbst, beziehen, womit zugleich ein Vergleich der Lebensverläufe und Biografien von Migranten untereinander möglich wird (vgl. Pries, in diesem Band).
