Die EU-Staaten im Vergleich

Auszug

Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch versteht man unter Europa nicht nur eine geographische Einheit, sondern auch einen durch die Werte des Christentums und der bürgerlich-liberalen Aufklärung geprägten Kulturraum. Die Idee einer gemeinsamen kulturellen Identität der Europäer, die der Vision eines politischen vereinten Europa von Anfang zugrunde lag, wurde durch die Erweiterungswellen der 1970er und 1980er Jahre nicht infrage gestellt. Ungeachtet der zwischen ihnen bestehenden Unterschiede waren die 15 Staaten, die bis zum Jahr 2004 der Europäischen Union angehörten, in eine kulturelle Tradition eingebunden, in welcher die Werte des Christentums, der Aufklärung und des demokratischen Sozialismus zusammenfließen.
