A relativist in pursuit of the truth: Eckensberger’s contribution to the study of psychology and culture

  • Chapter
Kultur — Handlung — Demokratie

Abstract

An overview is given of the perspective of Lutz Eckensberger on the relationship between psychological functioning and cultural context. There are three themes. First, Eckensberger’s most important ideas are outlined as they have been crystallized in key publications. Second, these ideas are compared to other conceptualizations of culture-behaviour relationships. Third, it is shown why for its future development the field of cross-cultural psychology can ill afford to ignore Eckensberger’s views.
