Die Forschung zum Handeln in komplexen Situationen- vor allem in der Luftfahrt — war lange Zeit an Fragen der Wahrnehmung und Aufmerksamkeit bzw. an Konzepten wie Workload orientiert, die sich hauptsächlich auf die fokale Aufgabe und deren Bewältigung durch den Operator beziehen. Daneben besteht eine weitere Anforderung darin, aus den aktuell relevanten Informationen ein Gesamtbild der Situation zu konstruieren, das auch potenzielle Situationsentwicklungen beinhaltet. Dieser Aufbau einer kohärenten mentalen Repräsentation der aktuellen Szene unter Zuhilfenahme vorhandenen Wissens im Langzeitgedächtnis wird als „Situationsbewusstsein“ definiert. Vor allem im Bereich der Luftfahrt entwickelte sich Mitte der 90er Jahre dazu ein reges Forschungsinteresse.
