In der Soziologie im Allgemeinen und in der Wirtschaftssoziologie im Besonderen wird immer wieder die Auffassung vertreten, dass sich die Erklärungslogik der Ökonomie, zumal die der sogenannten ‚Neoklassik‘, von den soziologischen Erklärungsvorstellungen unterscheidet. Im Zentrum der Auseinandersetzung steht dabei die Frage, inwieweit man Rationalität für die Akteure voraussetzen muss, um ihr wirtschaftliches Handeln zu erklären, und zudem das Problem, ob wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Modellierungen die soziale Situation, innerhalb derer wirtschaftende Akteure agieren, angemessen erfassen (vgl. Zafirovski 2000). Viele Soziologen bringen dabei kein Vertrauen in die Erklärungskraft von Rationaltheorien auf (Swedberg et al. 1990: 66 ff.) und halten zudem ökonomische Tauschmodelle für weitgehend unzureichend, weshalb sie dem Anspruch der Ökonomie, ein allgemeinverbindliches, ja ‚imperiales‘ Forschungsprogramm auflegen zu können (vgl. Hirshleifer 1985), mit Skepsis gegenübertreten. Dem entgegnen Ökonomen (vgl. Becker 1996: 237 ff.), dass die Soziologe infolge ihrer Missachtung rationalistischer Erklärungen weitgehend ‚theorielos‘ verfahre und eben deshalb nicht über das ‚analytische Potential‘ der Ökonomie verfüge; zu Ende gedacht bedeutet dies, dass sich Ökonomen mit soziologischen Verbesserungsvorschlägen der ökonomischen Erklärungspraxis nur ungern beschäftigen und auf die Erforschung der Konsequenzen des menschlichen Rationalhandelns in der Regel nicht verzichten wollen (vgl. Demsetz 1997: 11). Diese Blickverengung wiederum stellt besonders in den Augen von Wirtschaftssoziologen insoweit eine Absonderlichkeit dar, als die Ökonomie infolgedessen weder ‚Kontakt zur gesamtgesellschaftlichen Realität‘ halten (Baecker 1988: 347) noch die ‚soziale Einbettung‘ des ökonomischen Handelns zum Thema machen kann (Granovetter 1990), noch endlich die korrekturbedürftige Unvollständigkeit der Rationaltheorie des menschlichen Handelns bemerkt (Zukin, DiMaggio 1990: 3 ff.; Swedberg et al. 1990: 62 ff., 66 ff.; Beckert 1997: 25 ff.); zudem mitunter noch diskutiert wird, ob mit dem rationalen homo oeconomicus ein Menschenbild gewählt wird, das sich normativ verteidigen lässt (Miller 1994).
