Bekanntlich ist nach dem Nobelpreiströger Gary S. Becker die ökonomische Theorie auf jede Art menschlichen Verhaltens anwendbar. Zu seinen expliziten Beispielen ftir die „fast unendlich breite(n) Problempalette“ (Becker 1993: 9) gehört auch die erfolgreiche Erklärung von Selbstmord nach (1974).2 Im folgenden soil nun nicht die Anwendbarkeit des ökonomischen Ansatzes auf suizidales Verhalten bezweifelt werden, sondern dessen theoretische Fruchtbarkeit und empirische Evidenz.
